The Asian swamp eel is a freshwater, eel-like fish from the family Synbranchidae. This species exhibits fascinating regional variations across its range, with populations in the Ryukyus, China, Japan, and elsewhere displaying distinct brooding behaviors. Some populations construct foam nests where males guard eggs and larvae, while others lay eggs among floating plant roots with no parental care. Larvae are equipped with pectoral fins that enhance water flow for oxygen absorption through their skin. The form widely distributed across regions shows exceptional genetic diversity and is the variety established in the USA. Available for pre-order.
Environment: They thrive in shallow freshwater environments such as swamps, canals, and rice paddies.
Air breathing: These eels can breathe air directly through their skin and the lining of their mouth, allowing them to survive in low-oxygen waters.
Survival skills: Remarkably hardy, they can remain out of water for several days and travel across land to locate new habitats. During dry periods, they burrow deep into mud to wait for water to return.
