Black Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi) are beginner-friendly dwarf shrimp prized for their ease of care and striking appearance. These hardy invertebrates tolerate a wide range of water conditions and breed readily in home aquariums, making them ideal for building a thriving colony. Watch females molt and signal readiness to breed, then guard their eggs until shrimplets emerge. Shrimp molt frequently—especially after introduction to new tanks—so provide mineral sources like cuttlebone or mineral balls to support exoskeleton regeneration. Black Shrimp display a unique dark coloration that matches their eyes, creating an almost shadow-like appearance. They look stunning against light-colored substrates. With lifespans of one to two years, they're best kept in groups rather than singly. Keep these small shrimp in invertebrate-only tanks initially; their tiny size makes them vulnerable to predation by most fish. Provide dense hiding spots for fry. Allow 3 months to a year for the first generation to mature before introducing any fish. Our domestically bred Black Shrimp outperform imported varieties in survival and long-term success. Avoid mixing color variants if breeding, as offspring typically revert to wild-type brown or clear coloration.
