Florida crayfish are popular feeder specimens for large predatory fish like puffers, with impressive breeding rates that mean a small starter group yields continuous supply. Though often viewed as simple scavengers, they're skilled opportunistic hunters—attacking any fish or invertebrate within reach and capable of inflicting fin damage even on larger species. Most predation occurs at night, so tank mates may appear safe during daylight while facing nocturnal threats. Live plants risk being consumed as food sources. During molting cycles, their soft bodies become exposed and defenseless. Provide calcium-rich minerals like shells and mineral stones alongside dense hiding areas to support shell development and shield them during vulnerable periods. Their combination of aggression and periodic fragility makes solitary housing the best environment for this large species.
