Painted Swordtail

Painted swordtails showcase striking red or orange bodies adorned with variable black spots and patches, creating a splattered paint effect unique to each fish. This distinctive patterning intensifies toward the rear, ensuring no two individuals look identical. These peaceful community fish are livebearers that reproduce readily. Females release live fry rather than laying eggs. Maintain a higher female-to-male ratio to minimize harassment and stress, as males pursue breeding relentlessly. Dominant males develop characteristic swords and a modified anal fin (gonopodium) around 1–1.5 inches. Subordinate males may retain female appearance until 4 inches or larger. Rarely, older females have been observed changing gender, though fertility outcomes vary.
